How Ping Hunt makes a hunt near you

Where does the hunt come from?

Ping Hunt builds each hunt automatically from Google Street View imagery of real places near you. Nobody hand-picks it and there is no catalogue behind it, which is why there is a hunt to play wherever the imagery is available. Every spot is a real place, shown as it looked when the imagery was captured.

What to expect

  • Generated, not curated. Software picks the spots, not a person, so some hunts will be better than others.
  • Imagery has a date. Street-level imagery can be a few years old, so a place may look different today.
  • Coverage varies. Street-level imagery is not available everywhere.
  • It uses your location, to find a hunt near you.
  • Stay safe. Stay on public paths, watch for traffic and follow local rules. If children are playing, check the route first.

Common questions

Is there really a hunt near me?

Ping Hunt needs street-level imagery to build a hunt, and that is not available everywhere. Where it is, a hunt is ready when you open the app. More on finding a scavenger hunt near you.

Did a person make this hunt?

No. Generated hunts are made automatically. If you want a hunt made by a person for a specific group, build one in the app.

Is it safe for kids?

Generated hunts are not checked by a person. Look at the route before you go, stay with young children and stay on public paths. For a class or a party, build your own so you choose every spot.

What does it cost?

Ping Hunt is free to download and free to play.

What does it do with my location?

It uses your location to find a hunt near you. The privacy policy has the details.

Why does a place look different from the photo?

The imagery can be a few years old. A shop may have changed or a tree may have grown. Match what you can still recognise.
